Such services include the only Level III Neonatal IntensiveCare unit in the region and the Birthplace where more than 2,200 babies are born every year. Other programs and services include the Breastfeeding Clinic, a 20-bed pediatric unit, the Stork's Cradle Program for at-risk mothers, the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner/Sexual Assault Response Team Program, which treats an average of 50 children every year, and the Child/Adolescent Inpatient Behavioral Medicine Program at Stormont-Vail West.
2010 Care Line Campaign
The Care Line, established in 1992 by Stormont-Vail Foundation, helps to meet the emergency medical needs of patients who have exhausted all other resources. Assistance provided through the Care Line can be in the form of prescription medication, temporary lodging, transportation, meals, clothing and durable medical equipment.
The Care Line is funded solely by charitable contributions through a public campaign and an annual employee giving campaign. Details on both campaigns are listed below.
Friends of The Care Line Campaign
The ninth annual “Friends of the Care Line” public campaign will kick off in March 2010 raising money for the Care Line Endowment.
Donors making gifts of $1,000 or more in support of the Care Line are recognized on a scroll prominently displayed in the Registration area at Stormont-Vail HealthCare. For more information or to make a donation, contact the Foundation at (785) 354-6851.
Joy of Caring Employee Giving Campaign
The 18th annual Joy of Caring employee giving campaign kicks off March 29, 2010. Many Stormont-Vail employees draw on Care Line funds to help their patients in need, so they understand the importance of giving financial support to the Care Line. Funds are used as a last resort to help patients in need who have nowhere else to turn. For more information or to make a donation, contact the Foundation at (785) 354-6851.
Bal Jeffrey Award Stormont-Vail HealthCare Auxiliary Honored for Contribution to Health Care
Stormont-Vail HealthCare Auxiliary President, Wilma Naethe, and immediate past President, Jane Patrick, co-accepted the Bal Jeffrey Award recognizing the substantial contribution to health care made by the Auxiliary during their sixty years of service to the community in northeast Kansas. Steve Wanamaker, Chairman of Stormont-Vail Foundation and Don Schepker, Foundation President and Executive Director, presented the award to the Auxiliary in front of a large and appreciative crowd on October 28 during a lovely banquet at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center.
The award is named for Balfour S. Jeffrey, Stormont-Vail’s longest tenured board member, who exemplified selfless volunteerism in identifying and implementing the highest quality of health care in our community. His efforts contributed significantly to the development of Stormont-Vail HealthCare and the organization’s focus on excellence in health care. It is his example that defines the basis upon which the Bal Jeffrey Award is made.
During the banquet, a video featuring a number of historical photographs with a brief description of many of the Auxiliary’s projects during the past 60 years looped continuously for guests to enjoy. The video also acknowledged the 56 Auxilians who have served as President of the Stormont-Vail HealthCare Auxiliary over the past six decades.
The evening’s tribute began with remarks from Maynard Oliverius, President and Chief Executive Officer of Stormont-Vail HealthCare, and Don Schepker, President and Executive Director of the Stormont-Vail Foundation. Reverend Harry W. Craig, Jr., Deacon, St. David’s Episcopal Church, and a member of the Stormont-Vail HealthCare Board of Directors, presented the invocation. Vernon Long, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Stormont-Vail HealthCare, served as Master of Ceremonies.
Betty Jo Marling, who served as President of the Auxiliary in 1951 - 1952, spoke about the history of the organization which has been described as “the community that serves Stormont-Vail HealthCare.” Originally invited to join the Auxiliary by a founding member, she delighted in describing some of the Auxiliary’s highlights of the past 60 years and related anecdotes that were both humorous and poignant in nature. Of her decades long association with the organization, Betty Jo commented, “I really enjoyed the meetings where we shared ideas that contributed to the growth of the Auxiliary and then working to implement those ideas. It was rewarding to see those ideas become projects that ultimately benefited Stormont-Vail.”
Dr. Kathleen Harr, Vice President and Dean of the Baker University School of Nursing – Stormont-Vail Campus, described the Auxiliary’s pivotal role in support of nursing education by providing annual Nursing scholarships for students, Continuing Education grants for BUSN faculty members and raising funds for the Pozez Education Center where the Baker School of Nursing is housed.
Carol Perry, Stormont-Vail Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, reflected upon her experience with the Auxiliary and thanked the organization for its strong support of nursing at Stormont-Vail over many years. Carol noted the Auxiliary has been a great partner with nursing in supporting high quality patient care services at Stormont-Vail.
Wilma Naethe, who began her association with Stormont-Vail HealthCare as a student nurse and Jane Patrick, who has been heavily involved with the Auxiliary for the past 12 years, thanked Stormont-Vail Foundation for the honor and relayed the appreciation on behalf of all the Auxilians. They agreed it was a great honor to receive the 2009 Bal Jeffrey Award and have the opportunity to celebrate the many significant accomplishments of the Stormont-Vail HealthCare Auxiliary.
