Forensic Team Receives YWCA’s Community Partner Award

Congratulations to the Stormont Vail Forensic Team, which was honored Saturday by the YWCA Northeast Kansas with the 2022 Outstanding Community Partner award. The YWCA noted that this special group received the award “because of your tremendous partnership with our Center for Safety and Empowerment, we have seen an increase in the number of calls/requests for our advocates to provide emotional support and advocacy at SANE/medical forensic exams by 375% over the past three years. We are so grateful for your continued support of our work.”

Stormont Vail Health has provided the community a sexual assault nurse examiner for decades. In January 2020, a commitment was made to establish a Forensic Program and a team was developed.  The Emergency Department case management team was brought in to provide support. Collaboration between the forensic nurses and the case management team provides the patients at Stormont Vail Health a well-rounded healthcare experience with additional resources.

The forensic team has nine forensic nurses dedicated to assisting survivors of interpersonal violence.  The case management team has 12 team members including social work and nurse case managers available in the Emergency Department around the clock. Together, these teams have grown the service to a comprehensive program providing care for a range of survivors.

Foundation’s A Day in the Life –  Manhattan Style

Stormont Vail Foundation offers “A Day in the Life” events to bring in community, business and government leaders for a behind-the-scenes look at how our regional healthcare system works. The unique program took a hiatus during COVID-19 surges, but with the virus on a decline, the event was back last week with a new twist. The focus for this “A Day in the Life” included updates on our growth in Manhattan – but we also shared many of the great things happening in our acute care hospital and across our system. This included experiences in our stimulation lab and a trip to the helipad on top of the Pavilion.

Leaders attending last week’s event were from the Manhattan region, so they were particularly interested in learning more about Stormont Vail’s Manhattan Medical Campus under construction, our connection with the Kansas State University Physician Assistant’s program, and our recently announced Letter of Intent that could lead to Stormont Vail providing hospital and clinic services in Junction City and Geary County.

One of the attendees was Megan Moser, Executive Editor of the Manhattan Mercury. She wrote a story updating the community about the medical office facility being constructed on North Manhattan Avenue, at the edge of the KSU campus.

The Foundation has plans for three more A Day in the Life events this year – June 15, Aug. 31 and Oct. 19.

National Pet Therapy Day Picnic on Friday

Please join our pet therapy teams for a special time in the hospital courtyard from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. The teams are celebrating National Animal Therapy Day. Stormont Vail Health is very appreciative of our pet therapy teams and all they do to contribute to the health and well-being of our patients, visitors and team members.

 “Pink up the Pace” Supported by Stormont Vail Team

Those in Manhattan Saturday had an opportunity to “Pink up the Pace” During the 5K and 1 mile race to benefit the Johnson Cancer Research Center on the Kansas State University campus. The Stormont Vail Health team joined in a big way. Downtown Manhattan, Inc., partnered with Stormont Vail Health to host the fifth annual event. Mary Martell, Vice President and Regional Administrator, promoted the Manhattan clinic and provided progress on the new facility under construction, and invited participants to check out the mobile clinic before the race.

Current Status at Stormont Vail Health

Overall transmission of COVID-19 continues to increase slightly in the region. The northeast region of the country continues to see high transmission rates.

• 5 inpatients are COVID-19 positive.
• 75% of recent COVID-19 admissions are unvaccinated or had last dose/booster more than 6 months ago.
• COVID-19 inpatient discharges (previous week): 14. Deaths: 0.
• Zero COVID-19 positive patients in the outpatient Enhanced Primary Care program.
• 6.4% of people tested for COVID-19 at Stormont Vail facilities the past seven days were positive. This compared to 5.7% last week.
• 12 team members and 3 providers on contact leave for COVID-19.
• 103,338 vaccinations (included boosters) administered.
