We Celebrate Sierra Swearngin, RN, DAISY Award Recipient
Nurses go above and beyond daily to provide patients and families with excellent care. For Sierra Swearngin, RN at the Cotton O’Neil Cancer Center, generously taking extra time to attend to patients and their loved ones’ emotional and mental wellbeing is second nature. For this reason, we celebrate Sierra for receiving the DAISY Award!
The DAISY Award celebrates and recognizes nurses who go the extra mile as a way to thank them for the care and compassion they provide. Sierra, who has provided outstanding care at Stormont Vail since 2018, received a nomination from the husband of a patient she cared for during chemotherapy.
Time is a valuable commodity, but it can suddenly become priceless after a cancer diagnosis. Cancer patients often spend their time in the clinic and away from the people, places, activities, and things they love. Naturally, this can be a source of significant distress and make it challenging to maintain a positive attitude, an essential part of recovery.
Sierra made a difference by taking time and attention to meet her patient and loved one’s comfort and needs. Despite a busy schedule, Sierra attended to this couple and provided the same level of attention to other patients in the Cancer Center.
“My wife has stage three colon cancer, and Sierra was her nurse during chemotherapy treatments,” the patient’s husband wrote in his nomination. “She took great care of my wife to ensure she was comfortable and getting her whatever she needed.
When my wife’s numbers were too low for chemo, Sierra would make sure my wife smiled and stayed positive. She would ask me if I needed anything when my wife would be asleep during her treatments. My wife and I weren’t the only ones Sierra did this for; I also noticed her doing this for her other patients.”
Sierra, congratulations on winning the DAISY Award! Your generous attention to patients and their loved ones during one of the most demanding times of their lives shows that you are perfect for your role. We thank you for your resounding dedication and appreciate everything you do for our patients.

Sierra always has a smile on her face and a great attitude. She goes above and beyond her call of duty for her patients. Sierra is a great nurse and is very deserving of this award. I could not do what she does every day. It takes special people like Sierra to work with cancer patients. I’m very grateful that Sierra was my wife’s nurse. My wife’s attitude changed for the better when Sierra was her nurse.
I cannot thank Sierra and the team members at the Cancer Center enough for what they did for me and my wife. Sierra has a big heart and is very compassionate with her patients and their families. Thank you for your time.
