We Celebrate Meagan Johnson, BSN, RN, DAISY Award Recipient

Nurses go above and beyond daily to care for patients and families during their most vulnerable moments. For Meagan Johnson, BSN, RN, in the Stormont Vail Topeka Hospital Emergency Department, easing patient’s family members through times of crisis goes hand-in-hand with patient care. For this reason, we celebrate Meagan for receiving the DAISY Award.

The DAISY Award celebrates and recognizes nurses who go the extra mile as a way to thank them for the care and kindness they provide. As a registered nurse in the Emergency Department, Meagan plays a vital role in caring for patients and their loved ones in times of crisis, as she did for the parents of an 18-month-old patient.

“Meagan was phenomenal. “On a Thursday, our 18-month-old daughter was transported to the emergency room after having a febrile seizure. We arrived at the emergency room around 3:45 p.m., and Meagan Johnson was our assigned nurse.

My husband and I were a bit anxious when we arrived, as our son, who is now 9, also suffered a febrile seizure when he was about the same age as our daughter. While he was in the ER, he had a seizure while they were trying to sedate him for a CT scan, and he stopped breathing. I think this past Thursday, we were both experiencing a little PTSD from that event.

However, Meagan was phenomenal. She was supportive, encouraging, helpful, patient, and extremely attentive to our family throughout our stay in the ER. Meagan checked in on us regularly, constantly asked us what we needed, assured us that we weren’t overreacting, and was there for us at any given moment – and she was. She even stopped by after her shift ended to check on us, tell us she’d be thinking of us, and ask if there was anything we needed before she left.

In a scary moment of our lives, Meagan went above and beyond to support us. She really is an amazing asset to your nursing team. I’m sure you’re already well aware of this, but again, I think supervisors should always be made aware of positive experiences in an environment plagued by sadness and negativity.”
