New Cardiac and Vascular Center, Stormont Vail Foundation on WIBW-TV

Seeing how donations to the Stormont Vail Foundation support facilities to provide patients access to high quality, state-of-the-art cardiac and vascular care and procedures will be the focus of the WIBW “To Your Health” segment tonight.

Amy Burns, President and Executive Director, Stormont Vail Foundation, and Donna Bishop, Administrative Director, Diagnostic/Interventional, will be on tonight’s segment that airs at 10 p.m. on WIBW-TV, Channel 13. The segment typically repeats at 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Fridays on 13 News This Morning and will be posted on wibw.com.

Foundation donors have been very generous to provide $2.1 million in gifts and pledges on a $2 million goal for the Cardiac and Vascular Center that is under construction within Stormont Vail’s Topeka hospital. The expansion is being done in five phases, with the first three phases nearly complete. The center provides minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of heart disease, including angioplasty and the placement of stents to open blocked arteries, the Watchman Implant to treat Atrial Fibrillation, and Transaortic Valve Replacement.

Dr. Mehmood Hashmi, oncologist at the Cotton O’Neil Cancer Center, was recently featured in the Topeka City Lifestyle magazine. Two stories in the May issue have connections to the Cancer Center. One is “Nurturing Bond,” an inspiring story about Dr. Hashmi and a breast cancer patient and their bond through her journey. The second is “Threads of Love,” a story about a daughter and her cancer surviving mother.

In one article, Dr. Hashmi shared that he was inspired to become an oncologist when he saw how hard cancer patients fight for their lives. “Our patients are going through a very rough time so we want to make sure that we’re there for them when they need us. It’s a long journey, and the main thing is to walk along with them and make it as easy and comfortable as possible.”

Stormont Vail Receives Award from Midwest Transplant Network

Stormont Vail Health was recognized by Midwest Transplant Network during its recent annual Excellence in Donations Awards program. Stormont Vail received an award in the organ excellence category. Awards were based on 2023 donation outcomes. The excellence awards were presented to hospitals that had a higher-than-average number of families granting authorization for donation. Midwest Transplant Network is a federally designated not-for-profit organ procurement organization (OPO) for Kansas and the western two-thirds of Missouri and has been connecting lives through organ donation since 1973.

Congratulations to Dr. Bruce

Stormont Vail Health encourages continuing learning for all team members and send congratulations to those completing educational programs during this graduation season. A special congratulations to Dr. Karen Bruce, Stormont Vail’s Chief Medical Information Officer, for receiving her Masters of Science in Clinical Health Informatics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, last week.

Walk with a Doc – Join Dr. Doyle this Saturday

Take a walk with Dr. Thomas Doyle, cardiologist, this Saturday at Topeka’s Washburn University. Dr. Doyle will be sharing information about heart health. The walk is 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Washburn University Lee Arena (east side). You don’t need to register for this free event. The walk is outside unless there is cold or rainy weather, then it will be moved indoors.

Recognizing the 70th Anniversary of Brown vs. Board

The 70th anniversary of Brown et al vs. Topeka Board of Education on May 17 is being celebrated in Topeka and across the country. I encourage you, if you haven’t, to sometime visit the National Historical Park site in Topeka at 1515 S.E. Monroe. That’s where there will be a homecoming celebration on Saturday. In addition, there are art exhibits, plays and other events in the community where you can learn more about this landmark case.

I hope you are all enjoying the activities surrounding Health Care Week! We are grateful for all of our team members who daily provide and support the very best in patient care!

We together,
Dr. Kenagy
