Patient care technicians (PCTs) work behind the scenes to oversee the technical details that can make all the difference for patients in various healthcare settings. They work closely with nursing teams to achieve their ultimate goal: ensuring patients feel comfortable and secure during challenging, stressful, vulnerable moments.

Of course, putting patients at ease is easier said than done. For this reason, PCTs need outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, patience, and compassion—all of which perfectly describe Perlita Reyes, a PCT at the Stormont Vail Hospital Emergency Department in Topeka.

Perlita’s exceptional character, which is only matched by her impressive attention to her patients, is truly inspiring. She embodies our first tenet: “Together, we treat every patient, visitor, and team member with compassion and dignity.”

Perlita’s unwavering commitment to her patients not only exemplifies the crucial role of PCTs in our organization but also underscores the vital importance of culturally competent care delivery. This recognition reflects the need for such care. For this reason, we proudly recognize her as our June Person of the Moment!

“We recently had a patient in the Emergency Department who escaped an unsafe situation. The patient was hesitant to receive care upon arrival. Although this patient spoke and understood English, we realized that Spanish was her first language. Perlita, who speaks Spanish, was nearby and quickly jumped in to support the patient. She not only provided medical care but also comforted the patient, making her feel safe and understood. Perlita’s ability to connect with the patient on a personal level was truly remarkable. She continued to support this patient throughout her shift, in addition to her other job duties. This example is only one of many that demonstrates Perlita’s amazing character.”

About the Person of the Moment Award

The Person of the Moment Award celebrates the unsung heroes across Stormont Vail and encourages us all to continue making a difference in our everyday work. To qualify, the nominee must perform a specific act, no matter how small, demonstrating behavior that aligns with our five tenets and creates a meaningful connection with a patient, visitor, or team member.

This award is open to all Stormont Vail Health team members, excluding directors and members of the Operating Committee. When the Operating Committee selects a Person of the Moment each month, it notifies the individual’s department and organizes a small recognition ceremony. Additionally, the year’s awardees receive more recognition during the annual awards banquet.
