Ingram’s Magazine Honors Stormont Vail Duo

It is a great honor to be recognized along with a special Stormont Vail volunteer as 2025 Heroes in Healthcare in the recent issue of Ingram’s Magazine. Andy Tompkins, a lobby ambassador, was honored in the Volunteer Category, and I received recognition in the Administration Category.

I feel very fortunate to have worked with the amazing team at Stormont Vail Health, as CEO and president, a post I will retire from May 14. I shared in the Ingram’s article that Stormont Vail has a culture and commitment of providing safe and effective care close to home, and that is largely because of our team.

In recognition of Andy as a Hero in Healthcare, the Ingram’s article states that he truly has the resume of an ambassador. Before his retirement, Andy had a long career in education, including serving as superintendent of three school districts, the longest running education commissioner in the history of Kansas, a professor at KU, an interim president of Emporia State and Fort Hays universities, and president of the Kansas Board of Regents.

Andy also previously served two terms on the Stormont Vail Foundation’s board, and volunteers once a week as a lobby ambassador in our Topeka hospital. He helps our patients and visitors navigate to where they need to get to – and during those moments, often helps to put them at ease.

He notes in the article that he chose to volunteer at Stormont Vail because he was familiar with the organization, and wanted to be helpful and bring value. “It’s an overused saying, but when you want to be there to help others, it makes you feel good and adds meaning to your life,” he says.

Thank you, Andy, for being a true ambassador in every sense of the word.

Supporting Washburn Men (and K-State Women) on the Hardwood!

It’s been 24 years since the Washburn Ichabods were at the NCAA Division II Final Four men’s basketball tournament – but here we are! To support the Bods, our Stormont Vail team has several initiatives underway.

  • On tonight’s “To Your Health” on WIBW-TV, Kolten Schulte, a Stormont Vail Health Athletic Trainer, talks about his experience working with the Washburn University men’s basketball team and how he and our physicians help athletes be at their best on and off the court. Kolten is currently with the team in Evansville, Ind. as they prepare to take on the Nova Southeastern Sharks tonight at 8:30 p.m. This is Washburn’s first time in the Final Four since 2001. The “To Your Health” segment airs at tonight at 10 p.m. on WIBW-TV, Channel 13. The segment typically repeats at 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Fridays on 13 News This Morning and is posted on wibw.com.
  • Dress code exception* for the Stormont Vail team is in place from today through Saturday – so wear your Washburn apparel with pride. (And for those of you cheering on the K-State women in the Sweet 16 this Saturday – just go for it. Wildcat purple is pretty close to Washburn blue!)

Here’s the important stuff:

  • Washburn men play at 8:30 p.m. tonight in the semi-finals, viewable on ESPN+. The Division II championship game will be 2 p.m. Saturday.
  • K-State women play at 7 p.m. Saturday against Southern California.
  • Go Bods! Go Cats!

Please Say “Thanks” to Doctors on this Special Day

Please take the opportunity to express your appreciation to all our Stormont Vail Health physicians on Doctor’s Day, this Sunday, March 30! We are grateful for our employed physicians and all members of our medical staff who take care of our patients, families and communities.

Physicians have extensive education, training and expertise, and play an important role in safeguarding and improving the well-being of patients. While we celebrate their dedication, skill and commitment on this annual recognition day, we appreciate their efforts every day. Thank you!
