We Recognize Carmen Raines, October Person of the Moment
Professional chaplains are unique members of healthcare teams who undergo specialized training to bridge the gap between patient’s physical, mental, and emotional health by addressing their spiritual needs. As Chaplain Carmen Raines demonstrated at the Topeka Campus Hospital, spiritual care providers are also vital advocates for patients’ wishes, particularly in their most vulnerable moments.
Carmen received a Person of the Moment nomination for helping the spouse of a critical care patient reach the Topeka Campus Hospital from Junction City so she could be with her husband of 49 years during his final moments of life.
“While working with a critical care patient whose spouse had elected for comfort measures, the spouse was unable to travel to the hospital to be with their loved one for their final moments,” the nomination read. “Carmen reached out to their local church parish to see if a volunteer could assist with getting her to the hospital from Junction City. With her efforts, the patient’s spouse was able to be with her husband of 49 years during his final moments of life.”
Carmen’s actions align with our first tenet: “Together, we treat every patient, visitor, and team member with compassion and dignity.” Carmen, thank you for your kindness, empathy, and commitment to patients’ overall wellbeing at every stage of life. We appreciate everything you do and congratulate you for your well-deserved recognition as October’s Person of the Moment!

The spouse and bedside team members were very appreciative of Carmen’s behind-the-scenes efforts to not only meet the patient’s spiritual needs but also advocate for her to be with him. Carmen also offered a blessing as no priest was available to administer the Anointing of the Sick sacrament at the bedside.”
About the Person of the Moment Award
The Person of the Moment Award recognizes the unsung heroes across Stormont Vail Health. To qualify, the nominee must perform a specific act, no matter how small, demonstrating behavior that aligns with our five tenets and creates a meaningful connection with a patient, visitor, or team member.
This award is open to all Stormont Vail Health team members, excluding directors and members of the Operating Committee. When the Operating Committee selects a Person of the Moment each month, they notify the individual’s department and organize a small recognition ceremony. Additionally, the year’s awardees receive more recognition during the annual awards banquet.
