Good Catch Winners Recognized by Board Committee
Recent winners of the Good Catch program were recognized the Quality and Patient Safety Committee of the Stormont Vail Board of Directors. The program focuses on close call or near miss safety events that are identified and corrected by team members, thus preventing an error or injury. Award recipients were invited to a QPS Committee meeting. In the photo are Alonzo Harrison, board member and Chair of the QPS Committee, Michael Joens, Nurse Manager, 7 South, and Erica Pruyser, RN, both of 7 South, and Dr. Kenagy.
The Good Catch program recognizes and celebrates frontline team members for helping make Stormont Vail Health a safer environment for patients, visitors, and team members. The program is one of multiple initiatives in place to improve our safety culture. Good Catch winners recognized include:
February winner – Erica Pruyser, RN: Erica received an admission from an outside hospital. The patient arrived with an infusaport, however, there was no documentation about the port. Erica called the transferring hospital and discovered that the port had been flushed with Heparin without being de-accessed. If Erica would have flushed the port without obtaining this information, the patient would have received a bolus of Heparin.
March winner – Oliva Lopez, Medical Laboratory Assistant: A lab specimen was ordered incorrectly and this was recognized by Oliva and corrected prior to the specimen being processed.
Thank you to these team members for their “good catches” and ongoing efforts to ensure patient safety.
Stormont Vail Health Nurses Represent at Magnetizing KC
On Aug.20, 48 registered nurses from Stormont Vail Health represented our team at the Magnetizing KC symposium, where they learned and shared best practices in nursing excellence with other nursing professionals from the Greater Kansas City Magnet Consortium.
Thaina Dos Santos Jensen, BSN, RN, delivered a compelling podium presentation titled “From Awareness to Action: Implementing Nurse Safety Initiatives.” Tammy Gogel, APRN-C, and Katie Trejo, BSN, RN, showcased their insights through a poster presentation titled “Blunt Cerebrovascular Injury: Universal Screening with CTA Neck at a Level 2 Trauma Center.” These presentations on nurse safety initiatives and universal screening in trauma centers are crucial topics that keep our teams informed and prepared to maintain Magnet-level standards of excellence and quality.
The Kansas City Magnet Consortium, which comprises six Magnet hospitals across the Kansas City metro area, including Stormont Vail, offers valuable professional development opportunities. It brings area Magnet hospitals together to highlight the role of clinical nurses. This professional development opportunity is available at no cost to registered nurses.
Local Walmart Partners Raise $113,218 for Children’s Miracle Network at Stormont Vail
Our incredible partners at local Walmart stores went above and beyond in their fundraising efforts to provide life-changing care for kids at the Children’s Miracle Network at Stormont Vail Health. This year, they raised $113,218 for our children’s hospital services, a 33% increase over last year and the most this campaign has raised!
Thank you to everyone who took part in this initiative. Your support makes miracles happen daily. We encourage you to learn more about our work with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and spread the word with your friends, family, and neighbors.
We together,
Dr. Kenagy
