We Celebrate Our Mothers and Daughters – at Work!
For three families of mothers and daughters working together in the Stormont Vail Health Maternal and Child departments, every day is a chance to celebrate Mother’s Day! Take time to read the stories of these Stormont Vail team members who really are family in the latest Stormont Vail blog, available on stormontvail.org.
- Learn about a mom who is a long-time NICU nurse who says when she sees her daughter in her role on the business side of the department, it makes her heart happy.
- Experience why another mother who works in Maternal Child Administration feels so proud as a mom, as she has watched her daughter grow from being a hospital volunteer as a teenager to now a Registered Nurse with the team in Pediatrics, Pediatric Intensive Care and Young Adult Center.
- Share the joy of a Birthplace nurse who now works with her two daughters, who both are working towards a career goal of being nurses.
When we talk about the “family” at Stormont Vail Health, these mothers and daughters are leading the way – working together to care for our patients and to grow future healthcare professionals. Thank you for sharing your stories.
Congratulations, Amanda Allen, April Person of the Moment
Our nurse case managers in the NICU play a vital role in caring for premature infants during and after hospitalization. They also provide essential support for parents, which benefits their emotional and mental health and ability to bond with and care for their child.
For this reason, it’s easy to see the necessity for proper support for parents during their infant’s NICU stay. But, of course, a hectic environment, busy patient assignments, and other factors can interfere with NICU nurses’ ability to provide the support parents need. However, that didn’t stop Amanda Allen, Case Manager RN in the NICU, from connecting with a mother waiting alone on the day of her child’s surgery.
Her thoughtfulness went above and beyond to comfort this woman and help her feel less alone during a distressing, emotionally vulnerable time. For this reason, we celebrate Amanda as our April Person of the Moment! Take a moment to recognize Amanda and read her story here.

“To Your Health” on WIBW-TV Tonight: Focus on Child Safety
In recognition of Safe Kids Kansas Week, Francine Gollub, Child Life Specialist, shares tips to keep children safe during summer fun on tonight’s WIBW “To Your Health.” Francine has these reminders:
- Always doublecheck your car when getting out to make sure no children are left in a hot car.
- Bicycle helmets are important protection when riding a bike. With more children bicycling or out and about during summer months, motorists need to be extra cautious.
- Children should learn the basics of swimming early – and utilize life jackets for children around bodies of water.
The To Your Health segment will air at 10 p.m. on WIBW-TV, Channel 13. The segment will typically repeat at 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Fridays on 13 News This Morning and be posted on wibw.com.
Coffee Provided by Envista for National Nurses Week
Generous donors and volunteers from Envista provided early morning coffee at the Cotton O’Neil Asbury Clinic Wednesday morning – then again today at the Topeka hospital for the first 300 team members. Staff are very appreciative – and in addition to the special coffee from Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck, both mornings had beautiful weather.
Envista provided the coffee as a way to say thank you to our nursing team for National Nurses Week. Thank you for this special recognition of our wonderful nurses!
We together,
Dr. Kenagy
