Megan Northup, M.D., Joins OB/GYN Team in Emporia
Stormont Vail Health is proud to announce that Megan Northup, M.D., has joined our Obstetrics and Gynecology team in Emporia. A native Kansan, Dr. Northup was born and raised in Kansas City, where she obtained her medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She accepted Navy scholarship and spent several years in active duty while completing her Obstetrics and Gynecology internship and residency at the Naval Medical Center San Diego.
“I’m truly passionate about women’s health,” Dr. Northup said. “I want to make sure women are taken care of, have equitable access to care, and maybe even address some of the underlying issues affecting their care as well.”
“Many women feel like they’re heard and their concerns are dismissed. But if you take the time to sit down, listen, and really put together their story, a lot of the times you can find all of the contributing factors and all of the things that weren’t necessarily ignored, but weren’t exactly tuned-into either,” she added.
It was when she volunteered at a free women’s health clinic that Dr. Northup discovered her desire to care for and guide women during a unique life event that can be both joyous and extremely challenging. Dr. Northup’s own obstetrics story plays a large part in her approach to care. “I’ve had a stillbirth and a neonatal demise due to rare genetic conditions, and multiple miscarriages. These experiences help me see what my patients are going through and understand the level of care it takes to empathize and walk patients through both a difficult and high-risk pregnancy, but also help them through that following grief process and understanding it in a personal way and validate their feelings,” she says.
As Dr. Northup transitions to civilian life, she looks forward to building long-term relationships with her patients. “I’m going to be your partner in care. I’m going to listen to you, I want you to feel heard and respected, and that I’m going to validate what you’re going through and work with you to get you through what you’re facing in life,” she said. Dr. Northup is currently accepting new patients. Please call (620) 343-2900 to schedule an appointment.
Amro Elshereye, M.D., New Infectious Disease Physician
Stormont Vail Health welcomes Amro Elshereye, M.D., to our medical team as the newest infectious disease physician. Dr. Elshereye provides inpatient care in the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, as well as in various Topeka inpatient clinics.
Dr. Elshereye was born and raised in Egypt, but moved to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates at a young age. This transition sparked his passion for new cultures, customs, and people. Following his parents’ example, Dr. Elshereye attended medical school and completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Sharjah in 2015. He was inspired to be a physician because both of his parents are physicians.
Dr. Elshereye comes to Stormont Vail after recently completing his medical training and internal medicine residency at Brookdale University Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 2021. He later completed his infectious disease fellowship at the University of South Florida Morsani School of Medicine in Tampa. His affiliations include the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Disease Society of America.
Dr. Elsherye’s lifelong appreciation for the medical field and other cultures will go a long way to support his patients and Stormont Vail’s aim to serve its patients by connecting increasingly diverse communities with culturally competent physicians.
“Medicine as a profession is old as time; it’s always been there, and it’s always necessary to have it in society,” Dr. Elshereye said. “I think it’s irreplaceable. To have that positon and role in society is admirable, and I like the job.” When Dr. Elshereye isn’t helping patients or learning more about his field, he enjoys traveling, trying new cuisines, watching movies, and gaming.
