Juneteenth: Community Celebrations Planned
Juneteenth, which is also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Black Independence Day, is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared more than three million enslaved people living in the Confederate states to be free. It wouldn’t be until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, two years later on June 19, 1865 that the state’s residents finally learned that slavery had been abolished. Juneteenth became a state holiday in Texas in 1980, and was officially made a federal holiday in 2021.
Community Juneteenth celebrations include:
- The 11th annual Topeka Family and Friends Juneteenth Celebration will be noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at Hillcrest Community Center and Park. There will be a Juneteenth Parade at 11 a.m. on June 19, followed by a program at Evergy Plaza.
- Junction City will hold a Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 15, in Heritage Park, 6th and Washington. Sponsored by the Junction City Juneteenth Community Association, there will be food and craft vendors and music.
- Manhattan is celebrating with several events June 13-19, from food and music to fitness activities. To learn more, visit the Manhattan Juneteenth website.
